Madison's K-12 students are served by the excellent schools of the Madison County School District which is comprised of 10 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, one 9th grade school, and 4 high schools. In addition to the city of Madison, the district serves the cities of Flora and Ridgeland, as well as the communities of Camden and a small part of Jackson. Parents also have the option of sending their students to some of the area's local private and parochial schools, such as Madison-Ridgeland Academy, as an alternative to public schooling.
Several colleges and universities are just minutes away from Madison, making it convenient for anyone to obtain the degree of their choice without having to venture too far from home. Nearby universities and colleges include the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Belhaven University, Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Hinds Community College, Holmes Community College, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Madison also has a campus for ITT Technical Institute, as well as a satellite campus for Tulane University's School of Continuing Studies.

The Ross Barnett Reservoir, recognized by Mississippi Magazine as the "Best Waterfront Destination" in 2005, includes 105 miles of shoreline with a lake width of roughly 3.5 miles and a total length of about 45 miles.
